Current Projects

The Safe Care Study

  • The Safe Care Study, done by the Center and published in 2023, found one in four patients were harmed by the care they received in the hospital. A follow-up paper was published in 2024 and focused on care outside of the hospital. This study showed one in 14 patients experienced harm each year from outpatient care, such as visits to primary care, specialty care, and emergency departments.

Achieving Better Cancer Diagnosis (ABCD): Identifying, supporting, and learning from marginalized patients who experience delayed cancer diagnosis

  • Achieving Better Cancer Diagnosis, or ABCD, is a project led by the Center’s Dr. Gordy Schiff and sponsored by the NIH. In it, the authors propose a Diagnostic Center of Excellence (DCE) to seek out and transparently address cases and causes of delayed cancer diagnosis by bringing together national experts on diagnostic safety (Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School) and on Communication and Resolution Programs, or CRPs (University of Washington). Additional information on the project can be found here.

Project to improve secondary fracture care in patients with osteoporosis

  • Project to improve secondary fracture care in patients with osteoporosis, led by the Center’s Dr. Patti Dykes, is evaluating whether a specific intervention in skilled nursing facilities and in the community after discharge improves physical function and quality of life in older people in the year after a hip or leg fracture. Patient-reported outcomes, from 1320 patients across 24 facilities, will be measured: Effectiveness of a Multimodal Intervention for Transitions of Care after Lower Limb Fracture
