Injuries are the leading cause of death for the first half of life, with motor vehicle accidents, falls and assaults accounting for the most trauma.
At Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH), our Level 1 Trauma Center is working to reduce that statistic. We provide life-saving care for the most seriously injured patients. Each year, our emergency department treats more than 8,000 traumatically injured patients. is the chief of the Division of Trauma, Burn and Surgical Critical Care. Ali Salim, MD, is the chief of the Division of Trauma, Burn and Surgical Critical Care.
Our specialized Burn Center is recognized by the American Burn Association and provides comprehensive burn care, including burn shock, wound care, surgery and rehabilitation. Anupama Mehta, MD, is the medical director of the Brigham Burn Center.
Surgeons in our Trauma Center and Burn Center are fellowship trained with subspecialty expertise in plastic surgery, surgical critical care and burn surgery. They collaborate with a multidisciplinary team which includes emergency physicians, critical care physicians, orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, vascular surgeons, radiologists, cardiologists, nurses, wound care experts, dieticians, social workers and rehabilitation specialists. Our trauma and burn specialists tailor care to the individual needs of each patient.
We provide services for acute and critically ill patients—from emergency care for a third degree burn to treatment for a gunshot wound to multidisciplinary care for a pregnant patient following an accident. Our 24-hour trauma and burn transfer line enables immediate transfer of patients.
