Center for Transgender Health Education and Training

The Center for Transgender Health at Brigham and Women’s Hospital recognizes the central importance of medical education as a way to address the health needs of transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) individuals and promote universal access to high-quality medical care.

Medical Students

As a Harvard Medical School (HMS) affiliate, medical students rotate on our Center for Transgender Health teams and experience the various facets of transgender care, from outpatient medical interventions to inpatient surgical procedures. Medical students from other medical schools can rotate on our team. Please visit the HMS Exchange Clerkship program to learn more and to apply. Our team members also oversee some of the lectures and other educational sessions for HMS students.

Residents and Fellows

Residents and fellows in all subspecialty training programs at Brigham and Women’s Hospital benefit from the expertise at the center, through clinical rotations with specialists from our team and through lectures and hands-on teaching sessions. In addition, the Center for Transgender Health is the home of the Complex Gender Surgery and Microsurgery Fellowship and the Transgender Medicine Fellowship.

The Harvard/Brigham & Women’s Hospital Complex Gender & Microsurgery Fellowship is directed by Dr. Devin O’Brien Coon. Experience is provided in all core procedures, including phalloplasty, metoidioplasty, vaginoplasty, non-gender microsurgical urogenital reconstruction and craniofacial feminization. Program leadership training is also available in a growing multidisciplinary program. The fellow will hold a faculty attending appointment as Clinical Instructor with opportunities for graduated independence. This twelve-month fellowship commences July 1. Prospective applicants should email transgenderhealth@bwh.harvard.edu.

Brigham and Women's Hospital Department of Psychiatry also offers a Clinical Psychology Internship Training Program for doctoral students with a new Gender Affirming Care Track. The students in this program will work closely with the Center for Transgender Health to provide individual psychotherapy, group psychotherapy, surgical evaluations/support letters, support groups and advocacy work for our patients.

Educational Events

The Center for Transgender Health hosts a recurring Grand Rounds series which features leading experts from around the world to disseminate knowledge and promote education for advancing TGD health.

Training Clinicians Around the World

Our faculty are heavily involved in teaching clinicians in gender-affirming care worldwide. This includes leadership of educational initiatives with the Endocrine Society, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE), the United States Professional Association for Transgender Health (USPATH), and the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH). Our team’s publications on the topic of education in transgender health appear in various medical journals. Our faculty speak to audiences ranging from small groups to large national and international meetings of medical professionals and members of the public.

If interested in inviting a team member to speak, please contact the center at transgenderhealth@bwh.harvard.edu.
