Kidney Transplant Program Medical Expertise

Our nephrologists provide exceptional service and care to patients with complex medical conditions who wish to be evaluated for transplant. In collaboration with our post-transplant nurse coordinators, they also provide ongoing maintenance and follow-up care post kidney transplantation.

Close Communication with Community Nephrologists

A patient’s relationship with his or her community nephrologist does not end when he or she is referred to us for transplant. Our doctors will communicate closely with the referring nephrology team on an ongoing basis. If the patient and nephrologist desire, there is also the opportunity to transition routine care back to the primary nephrologist after the initial post-transplantation period.

Complex Medical Management

Our nephrologists are experts in their field with strong relationships across multiple medical specialties within Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Many patients with complex medical issues can be evaluated and transplanted after a thorough evaluation by our expanded team.

Second Opinions

We offer second opinions to patients with complex conditions who are considering kidney transplant surgery or who have already had a transplant.

Desensitization

Desensitization is a process that removes rejection-causing antibodies from the bloodstream, both before and after surgery. Our desensitization program, the oldest and largest in New England, helps to achieve excellent long-term survival rates.

Transition Clinic

We collaborate with Boston Children’s Hospital to gently transition the care of young kidney failure patients (age 13-18) to our program.

Pregnancy

We provide consultation and transplantation services to patients who want to become pregnant.
