Clinicians and researchers at Mass Eye and Ear – many on the medical staff at Brigham and Women’s Hospital – are pioneering new approaches to improve the understanding of the causes of ocular disease and advance the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment for wide range of eye conditions.
Our rich history of innovation has led to major advances in the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases, including the first use of Proton Beam Therapy (PBI) for eye tumors, discovery of Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) for the treatment of wet macular degeneration, development of the first pharmacologic anti-VEGF therapy for wet macular degeneration, and co-discovery of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) – the most widely used non-invasive imaging modality in retina.
Current research includes studies in age-related macular degeneration (AMD), retinal degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, infectious disease, ocular oncology, and ocular genomics. Research in ocular regenerative medicine is evaluating revolutionary approaches to restoring vision through stem cell therapy and other regenerative techniques.
