Thanks to our strong clinical focus, a tradition of educational excellence, a diverse and exceptional group of residents and faculty, and a superb, varied research experience built on several NIH training grants, our residency and fellowship programs at Brigham and Women’s Hospital offer the best academic training one can receive. Our goal is to train the future best in the field of surgery.
The Department of Surgery and Brigham and Women’s Hospital have a preeminent stature in the surgical and medical world thanks to the groundbreaking achievements of our faculty—from Dr. Harvey Cushing’s establishment of the surgical research labs at Harvard Medical School, to Dr. Joseph Murray’s major contributions in the field of transplant immunology that earned him the Nobel Prize in 1990, to our continuing achievements in all surgical disciplines. Our research labs are currently well funded, and our residents continue to make major contributions in both basic science and outcomes-related research.
We pride ourselves on our commitment to the highest level of medical education possible, as well as our resident and faculty "esprit de corps." Faculty, residents and fellows work together to face tough issues such as work hour requirements and core competencies. We make sure that we are adequately supporting and teaching each resident, so they are ready to successfully complete the board examinations and begin practice or fellowship at the completion of their training.
In addition, the Center for Surgery and Public Health (CSPH), a joint program of Harvard Medical School and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, works to advance the science of surgical care delivery by studying effectiveness, quality, equity and value at the population level, and to develop surgeon-scientists committed to excellence in these areas. Established at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in 2005, the center offers residents and fellows access to interdisciplinary expertise and resources both inside and outside of surgery.
