Research Fellowship

Goal

A one-year Critical Care Research Fellowship program is available at the BWH Surgical Critical Care Divisions each year. The fellowship focuses and the development of basic and clinical research skills for fellows with interest in academic critical care.

Eligibility

Fellows who will have completed their one year clinical training in the subspecialty of critical care are eligible to serve as critical care research fellows. Under unique circumstances, for exceptionally strong candidates, the one-year Critical Care Research Fellowship may be made available prior to their completion of the one-year clinical training in critical care.

Responsibilities

1. Fellows are expected to pursue research under the mentorship of one of the faculty members within the division, unless otherwise arranged and approved by the Director of the program (involving mentoring by an affiliate, outside mentor)
2. Fellows are expected to pursue both formal training in their chosen area of research (laboratory, clinical outcomes or translational research).
3. Fellows are expected to present both their projects under development as well progress report on their ongoing or completed projects to the Director of the program as well as at the monthly SICU Research Staff meetings.
4. Fellows are expected to present and submit their abstracts, manuscripts to the Director of the program for review prior to formal submission, as well as expected to do an in house presentation of their abstracts and lectures prior to their presentation at regional, national or international meetings.
5. Fellows are expected to comply with all the local (Brigham and Women's, Mass General Brigham and Harvard Medical School) and national regulatory requirements of research activities. The SICU project manager, Derek Guanaga, is available to guide and supervise the compliance of each of the fellows with the regulatory requirements.
6. One fellow may elect to work with more than one mentors from the SICU faculty, however, each mentor bears individual responsibility for overseeing the project(s) that they are mentoring. The ultimate responsibility to maintain the highest level of quality and compliance for each research project rests with the mentor.
7. Any indication of non-compliance on part of a research fellow, noted by any member of the faculty or research staff, will immediately be addressed with both the mentor overseeing the particular project of the fellow as well as the Director of SICU Research and the Fellowship Program.
8. Fellows, with the guidance and assistance of their mentor(s), are expected to pursue outside funding of their fellowship projects.
9. Assistance from the support staff may be made available to the research fellows in their pursuit of their projects as seen appropriate by the Director of Research and the Research Project Manager.
10. Biostatistical support is available and is recommended for all research projects though all phases, and should be requested in writing (via a separate request form).
