EXTraction of EMR Numerical Data (EXTEND) was develop by Tianrun Cai at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Katherine P. Liao at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Frank Rybicki at University of Ottawa, Tianxi Cai at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. EXTEND is a natural language processing (NLP) tool that can efficiently extract numerical clinical data from different type of narrative notes with high accuracy. By expanding the dictionary and developing new rules, the usage of EXTEND can be easily expanded to extract additional numerical data important in clinical outcomes research. More information from the publication can be found here as well as on the Verity Bioinformatics core page.

The rheumatoid arthritis CVD risk calculator (Extended Risk Score – Rheumatoid Arthritis, ERS-RA) was developed and validated by Dr. Daniel Solomon and colleagues using data from CORRONA. It is not meant as a substitute for clinical judgment. Patients and providers can use it as a tool to predict cardiovascular risk in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

The Chart Review Tool Powered by NLP (CHANL) is designed to streamline the chart review process of narrative text notes sourced from electronic medical records (EMR). Its functionality extends beyond conducting intelligent searches for multiple keywords concurrently; it automatically identifies associated terms and concepts within the notes. The interface emphasizes recognized information within the notes, facilitating easy retrieval of required data. Existing users have reported notable enhancements in the efficiency and precision of chart reviews. CHANL is developed by Dr. Tianrun Cai.

The CSQ was developed by Dr. Elizabeth Karlson and others in the BWH Section of Clinical Sciences as a validated technique for screening individuals in the general population for presence of a connective tissue diseases (CTD) including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), scleroderma, polymyositis, dermatomyositis, mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) and Sjogren’s syndrome. Because CTD are uncommon in the general population, the CSQ provides an effective screen to identify subjects with CTD for further study and has been applied to several population based studies. Click here for more information on the CSQ.
The major toxicity risk score for patients using NSAIDs was derived and validated by Dr. Daniel Solomon and colleagues using data from the PRECISION trial. It is not meant as a substitute for clinical judgment. Patients and providers can use it as a tool to predict major toxicities associated with NSAIDs over a one year course.

This paper from researchers at BWH and the Veteran’s Administration Health System defines an index for using administrative claims data for estimating RA severity. The claims-based index for RA severity (CIRAS) has been used in multiple papers.
Many investigators want to use health care utilization databases for RA research. This paper by Kim et al describes an algorithm for acutely identifying RA patients in large insurance claims.
