Diagnostic Neuroradiology
The Diagnostic Neuroradiology service provides consultation services for imaging disorders of the brain, spine, head and neck. Diagnostic neuroradiology procedures performed include:
- MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) of the brain, spine, head and neck
- MRA (Magnetic Resonance Angiography) of the brain, spine, head and neck
- CT (Computerized Axial Tomography) of the brain, spine, head and neck
- CTA (Computerized Tomographic Angiography) of the brain, spine, head and neck
- Cerebral Angiograms
- Myelograms
- Plain-film radiography of the head, spine, and temporal bones
Emergency neuroradiology service is available at all times.
Interventional Neuroradiology
Neuro-interventional procedures in the Stroke and Cerebrovascular Center at Brigham and Women's Hospital include:
- Stroke therapy
- Coiling of intracranial aneurysms
- Angioplasty and stenting of occlusive vascular lesions in the carotid arteries and intracranial blood vessels
- Microcatheter injection to fill malformations and decrease the risk of dangerous bleeding in patients with intracranial vascular malformations, including AVMs (arteriovenous malformations).
- Presurgical tumor embolization
- Nosebleed treatment
- Cerebral angiograms
- Spinal angiograms
Image-Guided Interventions in the Head, Neck, and Spine Interventions
Our neuroradiologists are experts at performing image-guided interventions in the skull base, face, neck, and spine. We utilize ultrasound, CT, and MRI to perform minimally invasive biopsies and treatments. We collaborate closely with many Brigham and Women’s and Dana-Farber surgeons, oncologists, and other medical providers. We perform approximately 500 to 700 procedures per year. Examples of the procedures we perform include:
Skull Base / Face / Neck:
- Biopsies of lymph nodes, soft tissue tumors, and bone tumors
- Drainage of cysts and other fluid collections
- Ablation of tumors, lymph node metastases, and benign thyroid nodules
Cervical, Thoracic, and Lumbar Spine:
- Biopsies of bone lesions, intervertebral disc lesions, and paraspinous soft tissue lesions
- Nerve blocks
- Epidural steroid injections
- Facet joint injections
- Blood Patches
- Discograms
- Vertebroplasty for benign and pathological compression fractures
- Ablation of bone and epidural tumors
