State-of-the-Art 7T
MRI Available for Patients The Department of Radiology is pleased to announce that a new 7 Tesla (7T) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner, that was delivered to us in May of 2017, and is situated in the Hale Building for Transformative Medicine, has received federal and state approvals for clinical use. The device and will be open for clinical scanning starting on Monday, September 10th. Part of a new generation of ultra-high field instruments, the 7T MRI at BWH is the second in the country to be approved for clinical use and can now be fully integrated into the MRI program at BWH.
The 7T’s superior field strength, which is more than double the strength of the 3T MRI scanners that are widely in clinical use, provides a stronger signal and higher resolution images that can offer advanced clinical insights into neurologic diseases like multiple sclerosis and epilepsy, and musculoskeletal conditions that involve the cartilage, muscle and fascia of the knee joint. Because of it is such a specialized device, it is important that BWPO referring physicians know that the 7T MRI can currently only perform MR images of the brain and the knee.
