Friends and family play an important part in the care of our surgery patients at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH). We do everything possible to make sure they are informed and comfortable during their loved one’s visit. Here you’ll find helpful information about services for families, including waiting areas, as well as links to hospital directions, parking, dining, interpreter services and more.
Getting to BWH
Visit Locations and Directions for information about Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH). Visit the links below for:
Parking at BWH
Valet parking is available at both of the hospital’s Francis Street entrances 45 Francis Street and 75 Francis Street, at the 60 Fenwood Road Garage below the Hale Building for Transformative Medicine, and at 221 Longwood Avenue.
You can also self-park in our garages at 45 and 80 Francis Street and 60 Fenwood Road.
Checking in at Day Surgery
From the 75 Francis Street entrance, take the Amory elevators to L1 and follow the signs to Day Surgery. Patients register at the front desk and meet with a nurse prior to surgery.
Day Surgery Family Waiting Room
While the patient is in surgery, you are welcome to wait in the Family Waiting Room, located in the Day Surgery unit, where you will have access to WiFi, TV and reading materials. You may be given a beeper to notify you when surgery is finished and your loved one is ready to see you; that beeper works up to a one mile radius from the hospital. You may also be notified by cell phone. A coordinator is available throughout the day for updates on the surgical schedule and patient progress.
There are several other family and visitor areas located within BWH and the Shapiro Cardiovascular Center where you may also wait. All have access to WiFi and other amenities.
Interpreter Services
Interpreter services are available for non-English speakers and family members who have hearing impairments.
While You Wait
If time allows, you may visit any of the dining options within BWH or restaurants and cafes within walking distance from the hospital. There are also nearby shopping areas and outdoor spaces.
The chapel, located on the first floor of BWH, is a quiet place for prayer and relaxation.
ATM machines are located behind the stairs in the main lobby at 75 Francis Street and in the lobby at 45 Francis Street.
Following Surgery
You will be notified when you can go into the recovery room to visit your loved one. When the patient is ready to be discharged, a nurse will explain the discharge instructions and answer any questions you may have.
After being discharged, the patient will be escorted to the main entrance at 75 Francis Street by Day Surgery staff. You can retrieve your car from the parking garage or use valet service.
Please note that all day surgery patients must be accompanied home by a responsible adult.
