The Franz Von Lichtenberg Fellowship in Infectious Disease and Molecular Microbiology (Medical Microbiology) is a fully accredited one-year training program in medical microbiology, based at Brigham and Women's Hospital (an affiliate of Harvard Medical School), with elective rotations to the Centers for Disease Control (Atlanta, GA).
This is a specialized fellowship designed to train the next leaders in the field of infectious disease diagnostics and combines the traditional curriculum of medical microbiology (bacteriology, mycology, virology, and parasitology) with a unique long-term experiences in anatomic infectious disease pathology and molecular diagnostics. The curriculum includes formal block rotations in all areas of microbiology, elective experiences at other institutions, and dedicated research time. As part of the long-term experiences, the trainee is involved with daily sign out of anatomic cases with infectious etiologies, correlation of these cases with microbiology, and use, design, and practical implementation of molecular diagnostics for infectious diseases. Trainees also participate in teaching fellow residents in related disciplines and medical students at Harvard Medical School.
Opportunities for research collaboration with staff members are available in all areas of microbiology, molecular diagnostics, and infectious diseases. Faculty members of allied services from all hospitals also accept residents for research training.
