Meredith Beaton Starr, MS, OTR/L

Meredith Beaton Starr, MS, OTR/L, is an Integrative Health Coach with a Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy as well as advanced training in Healthcare and Leadership Coaching. She has been practicing for the past twenty six years in a variety of settings and is an expert in pain management, stress management and helping clients to optimize their ability to function in home and workplace settings to achieve optimal health. Her work with clients is centered on helping to create and sustain behavioral changes in congruence with healthy and adaptive goal setting and achievement.

Carolyn Bernstein, MD, FAHS

Carolyn Bernstein, MD,FAHS is a neurologist with a subspecialty certification in Headache Medicine and is Fellow of the American Headache Society. She is a faculty member of the Brigham and Women’s Hospital Division of Neurology, and is an Assistant Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School. She is a member of the American Academy of Neurology and North American Menopause Society. Doctor Bernstein’s interests include migraine disorders, hormonal headache and the use of integrative therapies in the treatment of headaches and pain, with a focus on lifestyle and wellness. She is the author of The Migraine Brain: Your Break-through Guide to Fewer Headaches, Better Health (Free Press 2008) and has edited and co-written two textbooks: Pain in Women (Springer 2012) and Medical Complications of Pregnancy (Springer, in press). She has lectured on headache and migraine locally, nationally and internationally.

Wren M. Burton, DC

Wren M. Burton, DC, MPH is a graduate of the University of New England where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science. She then pursued her Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Palmer College of Chiropractic West Campus. During this time, Dr. Burton completed a clerkship through the Palo Alto Veteran’s Administration Health System.

In 2024, Dr. Burton was the first chiropractor to complete the NCMIC Foundation, Inc. supported Clinician-Researcher Fellowship at the Osher Center for Integrative Health at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. As part of the program, she received a Master’s degree in Public Health from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Dr. Burton has an interest in healthy aging and caring for spinal disorders in the aging adult. Her treatment approaches include chronic pain counseling, gentle manual therapies and exercise / posture training to optimize spinal health. She has a keen interest in gait health and the reciprocal effects of spinal disorders on balance and mobility. Dr. Burton is also researching models of group care to deliver treatment more effectively in a community-supported environment. She is an invited speaker at many professional conferences and chiropractic institutions and has a growing portfolio of publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Caitlin Dangler, LMT

Caitlin Dangler, LMT holds a Bachelor of Arts in English and Psychology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She completed her massage therapy training and graduated from the Cortiva Institute in 2007. Caitlin is a certified Craniosacral Therapist through the Upledger Institute and has several additional advanced certifications, including Orthopedic Massage, Pregnancy Massage, Tai yoga massage and is a Usui Reiki Master. She has a passion for teaching, healing and gardening and enjoys hiking, meditation, reading and traveling. Caitlin is a member of the Association for Bodywork and Massage Professionals.

Jie Fan-Roche, PT, NCMT

Jie Fan-Roche, PT, NCMT, is a French-trained physical therapist with a US license as a nationally certified massage therapist who is fluent in French, Chinese and English. She integrates a variety of modalities, including craniosacral therapy, Chinese reflexology and acupressure and teaches Tai Chi and Qi-Gong. She is an Upledger Institute-certified CranioSacral therapist and certified instructor of the "Introduction to CranioSacral Therapy" workshop- a course appropriate for both health professionals and the general public.

Since 1990, Jie has been integrating these modalities into her work in Europe, China and the US, working for the last 5 years as a member of the Harvard-affiliated Integrated Care Center. Jie works with people of all ages, from newborns to the elderly. Her current practice focus is on CranioSacral Therapy, SomatoEmotional Release and Chinese reflexology. These techniques give Jie the opportunity to adapt to each client's needs. Her goal is to give each person a taste of a new way to approach their own body and the freedom to relax and express themselves, physically, emotionally or spiritually.

In her leisure time, Jie loves to play the cello, travel, read, and orchestrate her three boys' musical development.

Ian Koebner, PhD, MS, LicAc

Ian Koebner, PhD, MS, LicAc, received his Bachelor’s degree from Wesleyan University and completed a Master’s degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine at the New England School of Acupuncture. He also earned a Master’s degree in Pain Research, Education, and Policy from the Tufts School of Medicine. He also holds a PhD in Nursing Science and Healthcare Leadership from the University of California, Davis (UC Davis).

Dr. Koebner is an acupuncturist and scholar specializing in non-pharmacological pain management, the social dimensions of pain, and the public health potential of the cultural sector. He is currently researching the impact that museum and virtual museum experiences can have on persistent pain and how live musical events may enhance well-being. He is an accomplished and well-published researcher and sought after educator.

At the Osher Clinical Center, Dr. Koebner’s clinical practice focus is on non-pharmacological pain management through acupuncture. He enjoys building interdisciplinary care team networks to facilitate communication and collaboration between healthcare providers.

Matthew H. Kowalski, DC

Matthew H. Kowalski, DC is a 1990 graduate of the National College of Chiropractic, where he also completed a two-year multidisciplinary residency in orthopedics . He is certified with the American Board of Chiropractic Orthopedics. Dr. Kowalski is the President of the New England Spine Institute, PC, with practices in Holbrook, East Bridgewater and Carver. He is an adjunct post-graduate faculty member of the National University of Health Sciences. Dr. Kowalski has co-authored chapters on "The lumbar intervertebral disc" and "Lumbar spinal stenosis" for Low Back Syndromes (Morris, ed.). His practice focuses on the evaluation and treatment of patient suffering with headaches, neck pain and back pain.

Julia Loewenthal, MD

Dr. Julia Loewenthal is a geriatrician and internist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and Assistant Program Director in the BWH Internal Medicine residency program. Her clinical and research efforts focus on the use of integrative therapies, particularly mind-body practices, to promote healthy aging. She is the recipient of a HRSA Geriatric Academic Career Award, Harvard Medical School Osher Center for Integrative Health Pilot Research Award, and Annals of Internal Medicine Early Career Investigator Award. In addition, she completed 200-hour yoga teacher training and is a certified SMART provider through the MGH Benson-Henry Institute for Mind-Body Medicine.

At the BWH Osher Clinical Center, Dr. Loewenthal offers 2 clinical services:

  1. Limited outpatient consultation for patients interested in the use of integrative therapies for healthy aging, longevity, and chronic disease management. This may include approaches from Western medicine (e.g., physical therapy, medications) and/or advice about, or referral to, complementary therapies such as yoga, tai chi, acupuncture, chiropractic, supplements, or others. Patients are typically seen 1-3 times total. The first visit is 60 minutes and follow-up visits are 30 minutes. This service is a specialty service and eligible for specialist co-pays from the patient’s insurer.
  2. A group visit program called “Age Self Care” where patients can dive deeper into healthy aging topics and build a social community around aging. Patients are seen for a 60-minute initial consult visit. If they are interested in the group, they can enroll in a 12-week program that meets once per week on Zoom.
Arthur Madore, LMT

Arthur Madore, LMT, is a licensed massage therapist with offices at the Caritas Carney Hospital. A graduate of the Muscular Therapy Institute, he has chosen to specialize in the treatment of injuries and physical restrictions. His is the first hospital-based massage therapy practice in the state. He is Nationally Certified in Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork with advanced certification in Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT) and Feldenkrais-based Integrative Movement Therapy. He has been chosen as a research therapist for two Harvard studies on lower back pain.

Arthur has had extensive training in craniosacral work, myofascial release, as well as personal empowerment techniques such as guided imagery. For many years he has taught other massage therapists and physical therapists, massage, movement, and neuromuscular therapy as a staff teaching assistant for St. John NMT Seminars and the Somatic Training Associates. He is a longtime member of the American Massage Therapy Association and the International Association of Healthcare Practitioners.

Dennis J. Matos, DC

Dennis J. Matos, DC received his Bachelor of Sports and Exercise Science from the University of Central Florida and attended Concordia University, St. Paul, where he earned a Master’s degree in Sports and Exercise Science. He completed his chiropractic doctorate training at the Palmer College of Chiropractic West Campus and continued his education through a two-year residency at the Human Performance Center, located at the Northwestern Health Sciences University in Minnesota.

Dr. Matos is a certified Functional and Kinetic Treatment with Rehab (FAKTR) provider, a Functional Range Conditioning movement specialist (FRCms), a USA Weightlifting Level 1 (USAW1) Coach and a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician (CCSP).

Dr. Matos specializes in biomechanics and rehabilitation in sports and enjoys treating people of all ages and injury causes. Dr. Matos has a passion for performance optimization and care of the injured athlete. At the Human Performance Center, he provided care for athletes from over 12 different sports, including jiu-jitsu, women’s football, Olympic weightlifting, and hockey. The athletes spanned all levels, from high school to professional competitors.

Dr. Matos views everyone as an athlete in the game of life. By combining manual joint and soft tissue therapies with tailored exercise, he works to optimize human performance.

Thomas Mecke, DC

Thomas Mecke, DC earned a Bachelors of Science degree from the State University of New York and furthered his education through a Master of Science in Forensic Science program at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Doctor Mecke completed his chiropractic training at the New York Chiropractic College, where he was selected to participate in an internship at the Veterans Affairs Outpatient Clinic in Rochester, NY. The VA program provides military veterans with comprehensive chiropractic services in a multidisciplinary, collaborative healthcare environment.

Doctor Mecke has an interest in sports science and human performance and is an accomplished athlete. He is trained in the Graston Technique® and is furthering his education with studies in The McKenzie Method® of mechanical diagnosis and treatment. Doctor Mecke has been working at The New England Spine Institute since 2010.

Darshan Mehta, MD, MPH

Darshan Mehta, MD, MPH, is an Assistant Professor in Medicine and Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School (HMS). He is the Medical Director of the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), Director of the Office for Well-Being at MGH, and the Medical and Education Director for the Osher Center for Integrative Health at Brigham & Women’s Hospital and HMS. In addition, he is the MGH site director for the Practice of Medicine curriculum required of all 1st-year HMS students. His educational and research interests include curricular development in complementary and integrative medical therapies, mind-body educational interventions in health professions training, and promotion of professionalism in medical trainees.

Dr. Mehta received his BA in Biology from Illinois Wesleyan University and an MD from the University of Texas-Southwestern Medical School. He completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of Illinois-Chicago Hospital. He completed a clinical research fellowship in complementary and integrative medicine at the Harvard Medical School Osher Research Center, during which he received a Master of Public Health degree from the Harvard School of Public Health. He is board-certified in Integrative Medicine and has done professional training in mindfulness-based stress reduction at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. He is on the board of directors for the Academic Consortium for Integrative Health and the editorial board for the Journal of Integrative and Complementary Medicine and Global Advances in Integrative Health and Medicine. Dr. Mehta is active in the Massachusetts Medical Society, and is a member of the American College of Physicians.
