Women’s Sports Medicine Pre-operative Instructions

Before Surgery

Preparation

This step starts at your surgeon’s office. You may need specific tests/labs, such as an Electrocardiogram (EKG) or blood work before the surgery.

Pre-operative Evaluation

Depending on where your surgery is scheduled, you may have to go into Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital, Brigham and Women's Weiner Center, or your Primary Care Physician (PCP) for a pre-operative evaluation. For your pre-operative evaluation please be prepared with a list of your medications, test reports, and a list of doctor’s that care for you. If scheduled at the Day surgery Unit (Foxborough), you will receive a phone call from a nurse 3-14 days before the surgery.

Day of Surgery

• Arrange and confirm an escort home. You will not be allowed to drive home after anesthesia.
• Have contact information for your escort to be contacted after surgery.
• Do not eat or drink ANYTHING after midnight; unless otherwise instructed.
• Do not use any styling products or hair spray the day of your surgery.
• If you were told to bring certain medications with you; bring them.
• Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
• Do not wear contacts; bring eye-glasses.
• Bring identification.
• You will be notified when to arrive for your surgery (usually 1-2 hours before the procedure).

After Surgery

You will be in the recovery area: The Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). You will be asked a lot of questions about how you are feeling, in order to make you as comfortable as possible. Your nurse will give you discharge instructions before you go home. Your surgeon may also have instructions. You will get a phone call the following day to see how you are feeling and to answer any additional questions.
