The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) provides patient-focused, world-class and comprehensive care for all gynecologic conditions in addition to the most advanced treatments and solutions for infertility. World-renowned for the depth of our obstetrical expertise, our physicians and midwives work together to care for the routine to the most complex pregnancies.

Our patients have full access to the world-renowned services of BWH in Boston, with its diverse multidisciplinary specialists and state-of-the-art facilities, including our Level III Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU). We also partner with community providers to deliver gynecologic and obstetric care to patients and families close to home.

Nawal Nour, MD, chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, describes the department’s wide range of specialized services and programs from common to the most complex conditions. Dr. Nour discusses the multidisciplinary team-based approach to care and enhanced collaboration between clinical specialists throughout the hospital to ensure the patients and their family have the best possible outcome.

ERAS® - Enhanced Recovery After Surgery

Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) refers to a philosophy of surgical care that minimizes the physical stress of surgery on your body and returns you to normal function as quickly as possible. The key principles of ERAS are 1) avoidance of prolonged fasting; 2) early ambulation; 3) minimization of opioids, and 4) good prophylactic measures. We want you to return to doing the things you love safely, quickly, and more comfortably.

Below you will find several educational videos to guide you through having surgery on the ERAS pathway in the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at Brigham and Women's Hospital.

  • ERAS® Introduction: This video introduces the basic concepts of the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery pathway, which will help you recover faster, safer and better from surgery.
  • Preparing for Surgery at Home: This video suggests practical steps you can take at home to prepare for your surgery, such as stocking supplies, arranging a pet-sitter, taking medications, and packing for your hospital stay.
  • Nutrition: This video offers tips on how to meet your nutrition needs before and after surgery, in order to ensure your body is well nourished and as strong as possible to enhance the healing process.
  • Breathing Exercises: This video guides you through a deep breathing exercise to help reduce stress and anxiety before and after surgery, which will promote healing.
  • Checking into the Hospital: This video reviews logistics on the day of surgery including where to park, checking into the admitting center and family waiting area, and how the preoperative process will unfold.
  • Inpatient Stay: This video describes what to expect during your hospital stay, and how you can actively participate in your recovery process to meet your discharge goals and return home as soon as you feel ready.
