Clinical Referrals and Care

Family Planning Center

The Family Planning Center at Brigham and Women's Hospital is staffed by complex family planning sub-specialists. Our services include:

  • Second trimester dilation and evacuation
  • First trimester vacuum aspiration
  • Medication abortion and medical management of early pregnancy loss (with mifepristone and misoprostol)
  • Complex IUD insertions and removals
  • Complex Nexplanon removals (we are a Nexplanon Center of Experience)

All procedural sessions are staffed with an attending anesthesiologist. Ultrasound is used routinely. At the time of uterine evacuation, we provide access to all reversible methods of contraception.

Complex Contraception Clinic

The Complex Contraception Clinic at Brigham and Women’s Hospital is staffed by complex family planning fellows and faculty. We work with patients in collaboration with disease sub-specialists to provide individualized contraceptive care within the framework of the underlying condition.

Patients seen at the Complex Contraception Clinic include those with newly diagnosed or lifelong conditions who seek to initiate, switch, or improve their use of contraception methods.

We also work with patients whose disease process is affected by their natural hormonal cycle and for whom contraceptive medications may improve their primary disease.

Education and Training

Complex Family Planning Fellowship

Our Complex Family Planning Fellowship is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and is a two-year fellowship for Ob-Gyn residency graduates focused on subspecialist training in research, teaching, and clinical practice in complex abortion and contraception.

Our program is a collaboration between the BWH Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts and the Connor’s Center for Women’s Health. Our fellows also rotate at Massachusetts General Hospital and Tufts Medical Center.

OBGYN Resident Rotation

Brigham and Women’s Hospital has a long-standing commitment to full-scope family planning education for residents in the Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Massachusetts General Hospital Combined Residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Resident training in family planning services starts in PGY-1, with the greatest concentration of learning in medication abortion and both first and second trimester procedural abortion occurring in PGY-2. Our residency program has been a member of the national Ryan Training Program in Family Planning and Abortion since 2010.

Sub-Internship Medical Student Learning

Brigham and Women’s Hospital is a primary affiliate of Harvard Medical School (HMS), and our faculty contribute to the family planning education of medical students both in the classroom and in the clinic. Medical students have the option to rotate in family planning as part of their second-year principal clerkship experience in obstetrics and gynecology. We also offer a four-week sub-internship to junior and senior students that provides hands-on surgical experience. Harvard Medical School participates in the VSLO program for interested vising students, which can be coordinated with the HMS registrar.
