The Department of Neurosurgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital offers world-class pain management services, providing a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary and technologically-advanced approach to a complex and multi-faceted disorder. The Neurosurgery Pain Service consults with other disciplines, including the Department of Radiology and the Department of Anesthesia, to ensure optimal therapeutic treatments for each individual patient. Further, the Department of Neurosurgery has onsite imaging facilities as well as an unparalleled technical and nursing staff to provide the utmost quality of care for our patients.

Conditions and Disorders

Patients who can potentially benefit from the Neurosurgical Pain Service at Brigham and Women’s Hospital are those suffering from uncontrolled pain and discomfort from a variety of conditions and disorders, including:

  • Trigeminal neuralgia (tic douloureux)
  • Low back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Chronic Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD)
  • Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)
  • Postsurgical pain
  • Bone pain
  • Pelvic and abdominal pain

Diagnosis and Treatment

The pain management neurosurgeons at Brigham and Women’s Hospital use advanced techniques to help relieve severe, chronic pain. These include:

  • Microvascular decompression
  • Spinal-cord simulators
  • Percutaneous Rhizotomy
  • Dorsal Root Entry Zone (DREZ) Lesions
  • Motor cortex stimulation
  • Percutaneous cordotomy for cancer pain
  • The FINER Program: A virtual, interdisciplinary educational program for individuals who suffer from chronic pain but, despite all efforts, have not found long term efforts.
