Training takes place primarily in the Longwood Medical area at two of Boston’s historic academic hospitals: Brigham and Women's Hospital and Boston Children's Hospital. These facilities are located adjacent to Harvard Medical School in the Longwood Medical area, along with Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
Brigham and Women’s Hospital is a 793 bed teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, and is one of two founding hospital members of Partner’s HealthCare - Massachusetts’ largest healthcare provider.
Completed in 2016, the state-of-the-art Hale Building for Transformative Medicine houses the department of Neurosurgery’s Clinical and Research faculty under a single roof to accelerate breakthroughs and transform patient care. The building contains the Department of Neurosurgery’s faculty offices, outpatient clinic, dedicated conference rooms, resident and research work rooms, as well as basic science and clinical outcomes laboratories.
The inpatient facilities are located in the hospital’s main building (The Tower), which contains a dedicated 20-bed neurologic ICU, as well as a dedicated neurosurgery and neurology step-down unit. On-call residents are provided with a dedicated call room, as well as access to any of the department’s four provider work rooms for easy access to patients.
Brigham and Women’s Hospital is home to 48 operating rooms located on lower-level-1, of which 6 theatres are dedicated for neurosurgical operations. In addition, the neurosurgical department operates frequently in the world class Advanced Multimodality Image Guided Operating (AMIGO) suite which uses a three-room design containing equipment such as an intraoperative MRI and bi-plane fluoroscopy to allow for advanced patient care and research. Procedures such as MR-guided deep-brain stimulator placement, and laser interstitial thermal therapy take place here as well. BWH also has a hybrid operating room to allow for combined surgical and endovascular cases.
One of the most unique aspects of the Brigham and Women’s Hospital is its close partnership with Dana Farber Cancer Institute, which has inpatient beds located on the 6th floor of the inpatient tower. The unique relationship between these two institutions provides a high-volume of oncologic exposure to brain and spinal tumors. This provides trainees with a unique experience taking care of complex oncologic operations and treatment plans, as well as access to unparalleled research opportunities.
Boston Children's Hospital is a 415 bed hospital connected to Brigham and Women’s Hospital by an indoor bridge on the second floor, allowing for residents and faculty to easily communicate and collaborate on research and patient care. Staff physicians reside on the 2nd floor offices of the historic Hunnewell Building.
At Boston Children’s Hospital, the ICU is run by a multidisciplinary team staffed by anesthesiologists and critical care intensivists. The neurologic step-down unit is located close by, and provides a patient and family centered experience. The epilepsy monitoring team and control unit is located on the same floor. The outpatient facilities are located on the 3rd floor of the Fegan building.
Boston Children's Hospital is home to the first pediatric intraoperative MRI, and offers trainees operative exposure to complex pediatric pathology such as craniosynostosis, vascular malformations and moya-moya disease, pediatric brain tumors, and complex epilepsy.
