The Department of Neurosurgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2013. Since the opening of the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in 1913 under Surgeon-in-Chief Dr. Harvey Cushing, the Department has consistently delivered state-of-the-art neurosurgical care for patients around the world. As the current Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery and the Harvey W. Cushing Professor of Neurosurgery, I take pride in our storied history and look forward to our promising future.
The Department of Neurosurgery is constantly growing and improving to provide the best possible care, with 29 surgeons and specialists treating a range of neurological disorders, including primary and metastatic brain tumors, pituitary tumors, meningiomas, spinal disorders, aneurysms/AVMs, stroke, movement disorder surgery with deep brain stimulation, normal pressure hydrocephalus and epilepsy. Additionally, our Department is dedicated to the training of future neurosurgeons, staffing nineteen of the brightest residents annually and supporting five different clinical fellowships.
Our residents, fellows and neurosurgeons participate in a robust research agenda to improve neurosurgical treatments. Our research team, consisting of about 100 staff members in 15 different laboratories, is supported by nearly $10 million in funding each year. Funding sources include the ALS Therapy Alliance, Brain Science Foundation, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the National Cancer Institute and the National Institute of Health. Our investigators specialize in a range of disorders, and work to uncover new treatments and therapies for meningiomas, spinal injury, ALS and more.
Since my appointment as Department Chair in 2012, my goal has been to foster the neurosurgical faculty’s clinical and scientific neuroscience programs, so that we can discover the best treatments for our patients. Delivering advanced, comprehensive and compassionate care remains our priority and is at the center of all that we do. Should you ever have questions, concerns or would like to request a consultation, please don’t hesitate to contact us at (617) 732-6600.
It is my privilege to serve as the Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery and the Co-Director for the Institute of the Neurosciences, ensuring that we deliver the exceptional neurological care our patients and their families have come to expect from Brigham and Women's Hospital.
Sincerely,
