At our Brigham and Women’s Hospital campus, our Department has led out in the field of neurosurgery with more than a century of renowned neurosurgical expertise. Since the opening of the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in 1913 under Surgeon-in-Chief and renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Harvey Cushing, the Department has consistently delivered state-of-the-art neurosurgical care for patients around the world. We take collective pride in our storied history and look forward to our promising future.
The Department of Neurosurgery is constantly growing and improving to provide the best possible care. We have dedicated team of neurosurgeons and related specialists treating a range of neurological disorders, including primary and metastatic brain tumors, pituitary tumors, meningiomas, spinal disorders, aneurysms/AVMs, stroke, movement disorder surgery with deep brain stimulation, normal pressure hydrocephalus and epilepsy. Additionally, our Department is dedicated to the training of future neurosurgeons, with world-renowned fellowship and residency programs.
Our residents, fellows and neurosurgeons participate in a robust research agenda to improve neurosurgical treatments. Our research team, consisting of about hundreds of staff members in nearly 30 different laboratories, is supported by over $30 million in funding each year. Funding sources include the ALS Therapy Alliance, Brain Science Foundation, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the National Cancer Institute, and the National Institute of Health. Our investigators specialize in a range of disorders, and work to uncover new treatments and therapies for meningiomas, spinal injury, glioblastoma, deep brain stimulation and more.
Our goal has been to foster the neurosurgical faculty’s clinical and scientific neuroscience programs, so that we can discover the best treatments for our patients. Delivering advanced, comprehensive and compassionate care remains our priority and is at the center of all that we do.
