Spinal Cord Disorders

Disorders of the spine and spinal cord are common and cause significant disability. Patients can suffer from pain, paralysis in arms or legs, numbness, or difficulty walking. Because of the complexity of spinal cord disorders, patients often need specialized evaluation and management by experts knowledgeable with the range of disorders. Our Spinal Cord Disorders team strives to combine compassionate care, specialty knowledge, and collaboration with other related specialties to provide the best care. The team provides the following services:

  • Evaluation, diagnostic testing, and management of complex spinal cord disorders
  • Appropriate referral, if necessary, to other surgical subspecialties or pain management services

Some of the conditions that we see in this division:

  • Structural diseases of the spine affecting the spinal cord such as cervical spine stenosis
  • Transverse myelitis and other inflammatory diseases of spinal cord such as neuromyelitis optica, or paraneoplastic myelopathy
  • Infections of the spinal cord
  • Vascular disorders of the spinal cord such as from stroke or blood vessel abnormalities
  • Syringomyelia
  • Spinal cord trauma
  • Spinal cord disorders associated with other systemic diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus or rheumatoid arthritis or sarcoidosis
  • Genetic disorders of the spinal cord such as hereditary spastic paraplegia

Our experts can provide second opinion consultation or manage these disorders primarily.
