BWH/HMS Neurology Clerkship Services

The Neurology clerkship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), in affiliation with Harvard Medical School, is a rigorous neurology rotation that exposes medical students to the spectrum of neurology care, including ICU and non-ICU inpatient services, pediatric neurology and outpatient services.

Students train under the guidance of the clerkship director and the BWH team of neurologists who specialize across the spectrum of neurological diseases. The clerkship awards students the opportunity to apply basic concepts from neuroanatomy and neuropathology and learn about the clinical presentation, diagnosis and management of common neurological disorders firsthand.

At the Inpatient Neurology David Michael Dawson Ward Service, students learn about the inpatient management of neurology problems including stroke, neurodegenerative diseases, brain tumors and seizures. The Allan H. Ropper Neuro-ICU Service exposes students to patients in critical condition due to neurological problems, teaching them to take a history, perform a neurologic examination and formulate the differential diagnosis and therapeutic plan. The Inpatient Neurology MAS (Martin A. Samuels) Consult Service handles all BWH inpatient and emergency neurology consults, and allows students to make the neurological diagnosis based on the neuro-anatomical localization and history. The clerkship also includes a rotation at the Inpatient Child Neurology Service at Boston Children's Hospital, where students are exposed to a variety of neurologic disorders such as pediatric stroke, headache, developmental disorders, epilepsy and autoimmune diseases.

As neurology is primarily an outpatient specialty, students also attend outpatient clinics for the many subspecialties of neurology at the Jamaica Plain campus of the VA Boston Healthcare System. Under the direction of David McCarthy, MD, students learn about the outpatient diagnosis and management of neurological problems including stroke, epilepsy, movement disorders and multiple sclerosis.
