Founded by Dr. Vikram (Vik) Khurana, the PAMSA (Parkinson’s plus + Ataxia + Multiple System Atrophy) Clinic is now co-led by Dr. Khurana and the Movement Division Clinical Director, Dr. Barbara (Kelly) Changizi. The clinic is now a designated national center of excellence and is a major referral center from across New England, the United States and internationally. The clinic and Center focus on the clinical management and cutting-edge development of treatments for patients diagnosed with parkinsonian syndromes, ataxia, and multiple system atrophy. Dr. Khurana also directs the Khurana Lab, which brings together studies in molecular neuroscience, stem cell biology and genetics to better understand and treat these diseases.
Under the direction of Dr. Khurana, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School is an American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA) Center for Advanced Research. The APDA CAR at BWH focuses on understanding Parkinson's disease heterogeneity and developing targeted therapies through collaborations with Harvard-affiliated entities, leveraging extensive biomarker data, stem cell models, and genomic studies. By combining patient trials with advanced research techniques, the Center accelerates drug discovery and explores gene-environment interactions, neuromodulation, and molecular stratification to create precise, patient-specific therapies for PD.
