The Global Neurology Program supports clinicians practicing in resource-limited settings without access to neurologists through education and clinical consultation both on the ground and by way of the internet.
Of the nearly 50 million people with epilepsy worldwide, about 80 percent live in low- and lower-middle income countries (1), where approximately 75 percent are untreated (2). Stroke is the second leading cause of death and third leading cause of disability worldwide (3,4), and of 5.7 million deaths due to stroke (in 2005), 87 percent were in low- and middle- income countries, with 94 percent of stroke deaths in people under age 70 occurred in these countries (5). However, while high-income countries average three neurologists per 100,000 population, low-income countries average only three neurologists per 10 million population (6).
In addition, the Global Neurology Program offers outpatient consultation and evaluation and management services for patients experiencing general Neurology symptoms and who are living with neuro-infectious diseases such as HIV, or others.
