What is an H.pylori breath test?
An H.pylori (Helicobacter pylori) breath test is performed to determine the presence of bacterium Helicobacter pylori, which causes inflammation, ulcers and atrophy of the stomach.
How should you prepare for an H.pylori breath test?
The following medications should be stopped 14 days prior to the test: antibiotics and bismuth (e.g., Pepto-Bismol®). The following medications should be stopped 14 days prior to the test: proton-pump inhibitors (e.g., Prilosec®, Prevacid®, Aciphex®, Nexium®, Protonix®) and Carafate®.
You should also refrain from eating or drinking for 1 hour before the test.
What should you expect on the day of the H.pylori breath test?
You will first be asked to swallow medicine given to you by the technician. Fifteen minutes after swallowing the medicine, you will be asked to take a deep breath and then exhale into a balloon. Results will be available, through your physician, within 24 to 48 hours of the test.
