The Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Hypertension at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) offers a fellowship program to individuals with an MD or MD/PhD degree who have completed training in Internal Medicine. We pride ourselves in being a place where the future leaders of academic endocrinology can find a home and grow. We strive to balance the dual goals of helping our fellows see and manage a broad diversity of patients with endocrine disorders and providing a fertile environment where academic interests can be explored.
There are two tracks available for fellows, both are three-year training programs. The Research track comprises three years of training: Year 1: Inpatient and outpatient clinical training, identification of a research mentor. Year 2 & 3: Engagement in academic research (laboratory-based, clinical, health policy, education, etc.). Depending on their specific interests, fellows are funded by a training grant from the National Institutes of Health or from other sources. Research mentorship typically is provided by faculty members located at BWH and/or Harvard Medical School (HMS).
The Academic Leadership track is for future leaders in endocrinology who are not planning on making research the focus of their career. Year 1 is identical to the Research track. In Year 2, fellows consolidate their clinical training with inpatient and outpatient clinical work, while pursuing mentored academic activities in their area of interest (e.g., medical education, quality improvement, administration). In Year 3, fellows function as attendings in the outpatient clinic, while dedicating the rest of their time to mentored academic activities.
The division also offers a 4-year combined training program in adult and pediatric endocrinology for candidates who have completed a combined internal medicine-pediatrics residency program, in conjunction with Boston Children's Hospital. Interested candidates should reach out to the fellowship program director for more information on this track.
The Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Hypertension at Brigham and Women’s Hospital has a distinguished track record of contribution to and leadership in the field of endocrinology, a tradition we are committed to continuing.
