The adrenal glands are small in size, but produce a large array of hormones that are necessary to maintain good health. Disruptions in the normal function of the adrenal glands can result in significant short-term and long-term consequences. As a result, the vast majority of all adult adrenal disorders are managed by adult endocrinologists with experience with adrenal diseases, often in conjunction with another specialist.
Many adrenal conditions involve over-production or under-production of adrenal hormones, and can often significantly impair quality of life and even increase the risk for developing other medical conditions. Other adrenal diseases can include benign or malignant growths of the adrenal glands. We have expertise in diagnosing and treating patients with all forms of adrenal disorders, including:
- Adrenal insufficiency
- Addison’s disease
- Cushing’s disease
- Pheochromocytoma
- Paraganglioma
- Hyperaldosteronism
- Congenital adrenal hyperplasia
- Benign adrenal tumors
- Malignant adrenal tumors and adrenocortical carcinomas
- Adrenal nodules incidentally discovered on abdominal imaging
Your visit
The initial patient visit to the Center for Adrenal Disorders is often with an endocrinologist. A typical patient encounter involves a meeting with a physician to outline the history of the medical problem and a physical examination. Based upon the clinical assessment from the history and exam, further laboratory tests and radiology studies may subsequently be ordered. Most of these tests can be done the same day, while some may be scheduled for the future.
Together with the patient, we discuss and interpret the results of all tests performed, and recommend further testing or treatment as indicated. Treatment plans may involve lifestyle changes, prescription medications, and referrals to a surgeon or oncologist if indicated. Patients are typically asked to return for follow up appointments as needed for their particular condition.
