Brigham and Women's offers a variety of educational and support resources for weight loss patients and their families. These resources teach patients about their weight loss options, prepare them for life after their procedure, and provide both pre- and post-procedure education. Contact the team if you have any questions.
Please watch our video, "Getting to know the Bariatric Surgery Team and Program." In this video, you’ll hear from some of the providers on our team and learn about what obesity treatments are offered at our Center, with a focus on bariatric surgery. You’ll also learn about the patient journey.
We ask that you please watch this video in its entirety to familiarize yourself with our program. Once you have finished the video, please call 617-525-3597 when you are ready to schedule a visit with a surgeon.
We encourage you to attend these meetings that are both in person and through Zoom. The Bariatric Forum brings patients together to share experiences and provide support for each other. Sometimes we have discussion topics, such as plastic surgery, behavioral challenges, healthy cooking, and eating strategies. Groups are free of charge and registration is required only for in person meetings.
Our bariatric psychologists lead several post-operative support groups. All patients will attend a group 6-8 weeks after surgery.
Additionally, Dr. Mark Gorman leads online groups designed for patients who are further out from surgery and are looking for extra support in a small group setting.
You will meet with a registered dietitian several times before and after surgery. Our team of dietitians specializes in bariatric nutrition and is available to support you in person, over the phone, and through Patient Gateway. The dietitian phone line is open during office hours at 617-732-8884.
Pre-Operative Diet
All patients will start a pre-operative diet (English Version and Spanish Version) two weeks before surgery. If you have diabetes and take oral medications and/or insulin, you may need to use the pre-operative diet for patients with diabetes (English Version and Spanish Version).
