Our maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) physicians are experts in high-risk pregnancy who provide specialized care for women with one or more medical conditions. They provide personalized care plans and work closely with you to achieve a healthy start for you and your baby. Our MFM experts carefully track fetal growth and development, monitor and adjust your medications, and attend to all pregnancy needs. They work in partnership with Brigham and Women’s Hospital world-renowned specialists in your disease or condition.
Our specialists are available to connect with you for new patient consults, on-going prenatal visits and monitoring, and follow-up appointments, both from the comfort of your home through Virtual Visits and in-person office visits.

Complications from a prior pregnancy may call for extra vigilance. Women who have experienced ectopic pregnancy, recurrent pregnancy loss, preterm birth, placenta abnormalities or prior abdominal surgery may benefit by monitoring from a MFM specialist – as do older women, due to complications that arise more frequently after age 35.
The Cardiovascular and Pregnancy Program provides expert care for congenital heart disease and defects, abnormal heart rhythms, high blood pressure, structural heart disease, coronary artery disease and vascular disease. Our multidisciplinary teams include high-risk pregnancy specialists, a full range of cardiology specialists and specialized nurses.
Obesity increases the risk of gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, sleep apnea and delivery via Cesarean section. Obesity also is linked to birth defects and pregnancy loss and creates barriers for tests that monitor your health and the baby’s. Our supportive experts help you achieve a safe and healthy pregnancy.
If you became pregnant through in vitro fertilization (IVF), you are at higher risk of having twins or triplets and placenta abnormalities. Our high-risk specialists will monitor your hard-won pregnancy after IVF, in collaboration with your infertility team, and prepare for a safe delivery.
Starting even before you are pregnant, our MFM experts provide specialized care for women with diabetes; inflammatory bowel and other gastrointestinal diseases; neurologic conditions such as multiple sclerosis and epilepsy; cancer; asthma and other lung diseases; psychiatric illness; and lupus or other rheumatologic disorders.
In addition to closely monitoring the mother’s condition, high-risk pregnancy specialists track and may treat a baby’s developing systems.
