Bharti Khurana, MD, MBA, of the Department of Radiology, received the 2024 AI Cures Grant Award from Mass General Brigham (MGB) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for her research project “Empowering Health in Aging Populations: A Multimodal Approach to Transform Frailty.”
This award is granted to investigators from MGB and MIT who aim to collaborate on a joint project facilitating the translation and adoption of artificial intelligence technologies to improve health, including diagnostics, treatment and long-term outcome prediction for diverse patient populations. Collaborating with her MIT counterpart, Dimitris Bertsimas, PhD, Khurana leads an exceptional group of MGB co-investigators, including Houman Javedan, MD, clinical director of the BWH Division of Aging, Michael Weaver, MD, chief of the BWH Orthopaedic Trauma Service, and Mitchel Harris, MD, chief of MGH Orthopaedic Surgery.
In the project being funded, Khurana and her team will create a multimodal frailty assessment tool to give a complete picture of how well an older adult's body can handle different challenges like falls, infections, new medications or changes in their environment. Utilizing this screening early can help improve patient health outcomes and prevent serious issues that lead to hospital stays, being moved to a nursing home or premature death.
Khurana is an emergency radiologist and founding director of the Trauma Imaging Research and Innovation Center. Her clinical and research efforts involve accurate and meaningful imaging interpretation for patients in the Emergency Department, MRI optimization, spine trauma, machine learning tools in radiology, geriatric trauma and intimate partner violence.
