Humsa Venkatesh, PhD |
Humsa Venkatesh, PhD, of the Department of Neurology, was named a 2024 Pew-Stewart Scholar for Cancer Research. The award provides $75,000 per year for four years, totaling $300,000 in flexible support.
The Pew-Stewart Scholars for Cancer Research supports assistant professors showing outstanding promise in science relevant to the advancement of a cure for cancer.
With this support, Venkatesh and her lab members will continue their work investigating the reciprocal interactions between the nervous system and cancer. The lab has already discovered that neurons form synaptic connections to cancer cells. The team studies both primary and secondary tumors but has evidence their findings apply to cancers in other parts of the body.
This is the 11th year the Alexander and Margaret Stewart Trust has partnered with Pew to cultivate a legacy of cutting-edge cancer research. Founded in 1948, The Pew Charitable Trusts uses data to make a difference. Pew addresses the challenges of a changing world by illuminating issues, creating common ground and advancing ambitious strategies that lead to tangible progress. It is the sole beneficiary of seven individual trusts established between 1948 and 1979 by two sons and two daughters of Sun Oil Co. founder Joseph N. Pew and his wife, Mary Anderson Pew. In the past 75 years, it has contributed to numerous initiatives designed to improve education, job creation and opportunity throughout the United States.
