Shuji Ogino, MD, PhD, MS |
Shuji Ogino, MD, PhD, MS, of the Department of Pathology, received the Clinical Research Professor Award from the American Cancer Society for his research project “Integrative Transdisciplinary Study of Early-Onset Colorectal Cancer.” This award recognizes individuals who have made seminal contributions in cancer research.
Early-onset colorectal cancer (EO-CRC), which is diagnosed under the age of 50, is on the rise in many countries. The cause of this trend is currently unknown. Ogino’s study will seek to uncover what is contributing to the rise in cases, including gaining insight into how genetic, dietary, lifestyle and other factors influence the development of EO-CRC.
An expert in both molecular pathology and epidemiology, Ogino is founding chief of the Molecular Pathological Epidemiology (MPE) Program in the Department of Pathology. His work encompasses clinical diagnostics on solid tumors as well as transdisciplinary cancer research, utilizing a “prospective cohort incident tumor biobank (PCITB),” which was invented by his team.
The American Cancer Society is a nationwide health organization that works to improve the lives of people with cancer and their families through advocacy, research, and patient support.
