Raja-Elie E. Abdulnour, MD, of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, and Bharti Khurana, MD, MBA, of the Trauma Imaging Research and Innovation Center in the Department of Radiology, were named Scholars in Diagnostic Excellence by the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) for their work in advancing diagnostic excellence and equity.
The distinction recognizes their professional accomplishments, leadership in the field and the quality of their research proposals to improve diagnosis and reduce diagnostic errors at the national level. Funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation with additional support from The John A. Hartford Foundation, this unique collaborative program between the NAM and the Council of Medical Specialty Societies builds a cadre of national leaders who can drive implementation of effective strategies to support diagnostic excellence, including diagnostic safety, quality and equity.
Abdulnour’s work uses machine learning to classify diagnostic reasoning skills to improve precision education, while Khurana focuses on trauma imaging research to study the clinical and social determinants of intimate partner violence.
The NAM is one of three academies that make up the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine that aims to improve health for all by advancing science, accelerating health equity and providing independent, authoritative and trusted advice nationally and globally.
