The Fichorova Lab, led by Raina Fichorova, MD, PhD, of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, received accreditation from the College of American Pathologists (CAP) based on results of a recent on-site inspection.
During the CAP accreditation process, designed to ensure the highest standard of care for all laboratory patients, inspectors examine the laboratory’s records and quality control of procedures for the preceding two years. CAP inspectors also examine laboratory staff qualifications, equipment, facilities, safety programs, records and overall management.
Founded by Fichorova in 2002, the Division of Genital Tract Biology, which resides within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, is the first research division at the Brigham to receive CAP accreditation. Fichorova’s lab investigates how maternal microbes regulate reproductive tract immunity and how reproductive hormones and contraceptives impact this environment.
As the world’s largest organization of board-certified pathologists and leading provider of laboratory accreditation and proficiency testing programs, the College of American Pathologists serves patients, pathologists and the public by fostering and advocating excellence in the practice of pathology and laboratory medicine worldwide.
