Michel Receives NHLBI Catalyze Award

Thomas Michel, MD, PhD

Thomas Michel, MD, PhD, of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, has received a Catalyze Award for Enabling Technologies and Transformative Platforms from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) for his research program on “Dynamic Tissue-Specific Modulation of Redox Stress Using Chemogenetics."

The Catalyze Award facilitates the translation of basic science discoveries into viable diagnostic and therapeutic candidates cleared for human testing. Michel’s research program uses the new science of chemogenetics, a powerful method to control intracellular signaling pathways, to develop novel genetically modified animal models to study heart failure and aortic aneurysm formation.

Michel is a cardiologist at the Brigham and a professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He leads a basic research lab at the Brigham specializing in cardiovascular signal transduction. His research studies have had a broad impact in cardiovascular pharmacology, spanning from cellular imaging approaches to the creation and analysis of informative animal models. He also leads the Cardiotonics, a musical troupe of Brigham medical residents that performs annually for inpatients at the Brigham on Christmas Day, accompanied by Michel on the accordion. His clinical interests include general cardiology and ischemic heart disease.

The NHLBI provides global leadership for a research, training, and education program to promote the prevention and treatment of heart, lung and blood disorders and enhance the health of all individuals so that they can live longer and more fulfilling lives.
