Laura Cox, PhD |
Laura Cox, PhD, of the Ann Romney Center for Neurologic Diseases, was awarded the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) Foundation’s Microbial Pathogenesis in Alzheimer’s Disease Grant for her research, “Investigating Strain-Specific Pathogenicity Factors in Bacteroides That Influence Alzheimer’s Disease.”
Cox was one of the 10 researchers worldwide awarded this $100,000 prize for exploring the link between an infectious agent and Alzheimer’s disease. Cox’s study has the potential to identify molecular targets in Bacteroides fragilis that could one day be used to develop diagnostic screening tests and novel therapeutic approaches for Alzheimer’s disease.
More broadly, Cox focuses her research on investigating how the gut microbiota modulates chronic immunologic, metabolic and neurologic diseases. She collaborates with basic science and clinical researchers to examine these interactions in Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson's disease and oral tolerance.
The IDSA Foundation aims to reduce the devastating impact of infectious diseases on humanity by empowering the next generation of infectious disease leaders, investing in research and advocating for patient care.
