Peter Libby, MD, (center) accepts 2019 Lecture on Clinical Science Honorary Award |
Peter Libby, MD, of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, received a 2019 Lecture on Clinical Science Honorary Award from the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Kardiologie (German Cardiac Society) for his lecture entitled “Anti-inflammatory Strategies in Atherosclerosis.”
Libby’s lecture covered more than three decades of his research examining inflammation in atherosclerosis and vascular biology, specifically a pro-inflammatory molecule known as Interleukin-1 and its role in atherosclerosis, a disease in which plaque accumulates inside the artery wall and can cause heart attacks and strokes.
Libby’s current studies examine arteriosclerosis (narrowing of the arteries) and focus on the various messengers produced by the body that may cause the development, disruption and blockages of plaque in the arteries. He has contributed more than three decades of research to the translation of inflammation in vascular disease to clinical practice. Libby has also helped organize and lead large-scale clinical trials that have shown the benefits of targeting this process, including the prevention of recurrent heart attacks.
Deutsche Gesellschaft für Kardiologie is a member of the European Society of Cardiology, a nonprofit medical society focusing on the prevention, diagnosis and management of diseases of the heart and blood vessels.
