Carla Monteiro, a care transition specialist in the Bridge Clinic and a Social Work resident in the Emergency Department, won the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Massachusetts Chapter’s Future of Social Work award. This honor recognizes the contributions of an exceptional student enrolled in a Massachusetts social work graduate program.

NASW selected Monteiro, an advanced standing student at Boston College completing a master’s degree in social work this May, for her “well-established legacy of relentless advocacy for disenfranchised minorities and those in need.” She was honored at the State House during a ceremony in March.

In addition to her work at the Brigham, she is the founder and president of the Cape Verdean Social Workers Association and serves on the board of directors at Nos Di Tchada i Amigos — a nonprofit organization focused on improving a local community in Cape Verde, Africa, and its residents. She is also involved with the Greater Boston Association of Black Social Workers and is a “big sister” with the Big Sister Association of Greater Boston. Additionally, she is one of 277 elected delegates for the National Association of Social Workers Delegate Assembly slate for Massachusetts.

Founded in 1955, the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) is the largest membership organization of professional social workers in the world, with more than 120,000 members across its 55 chapters. The Massachusetts Chapter of NASW is one of the largest chapters in the country with more than 6,300 members. NASW works to enhance the professional growth and development of its members, to create and maintain professional standards, and to advance sound social policies.
