Alireza Haghighi, MD, DPhil, a physician-scientist in the Department of Medicine, was named one of the inaugural winners of the Global Health Pioneer Award in honor of his significant contributions to improving the quality of life through innovation and capacity-building.

This award celebrates the outstanding dedication, innovation and commitment of health care leaders worldwide who have made significant contribution to the global health. Haghighi was presented the award in Dubai earlier this year during a ceremony held in partnership by Gruppo San Donato, the UAE Genetic Disease Association and The Arab Health.

Haghighi is the founding president of the Advancement Initiative for Medicine and Science (AIMS), a global foundation that brings together world-class academics and physicians from the U.S. and Europe. Together, they work with governments and universities in partner countries to develop and implement knowledge- and expertise-transfer programs to build local capacity in medicine and surgery.

In his work at the Brigham and Harvard Medical School, Haghighi focuses his research on clinical and genetic investigation of inherited diseases and discovering novel disease genes, with a focus on cardiovascular disease. He also works on translating the research discoveries into better diagnostics and improved patient care.
