Berliner Named Inaugural Bunn Chair in Medicine

Nancy Berliner, MD

Nancy Berliner, MD, chief of the Division of Hematology and director of the Boston Hemophilia Center, was named the inaugural H. Franklin Bunn, MD, Distinguished Chair in Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Berliner was honored in light of her role as chief of the division and her many outstanding achievements and contributions to the field of hematology.

Berliner has broad clinical interests in both classical hematology and hematologic malignancies, and is one of the world experts on hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, a rare condition associated with uncontrolled activation of the immune system. Her basic research is focused on the regulation of neutrophil-specific gene expression and its disruption in two immune system disorders, myelodysplasia and acute leukemia, and on the pathogenesis of anemia in the elderly. In addition to her work at BWH, she is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and was president of the American Society of Hematology in 2009.
