BWH Included in Becker's 60 Greenest Hospitals in America

Brigham and Women's Hospital was featured in Becker's Hospital Review's 2017 list of the 60 Greenest Hospitals in America.

The institutions recognized were honored for embracing initiatives to reduce their environmental footprint in the community. To compile this list, the Becker's editorial team considered nominations and conducted editorial research, looking at awards won from Practice Greenhealth, the U.S. Green Building Council, the American Society for Healthcare Engineering and the Environmental Protection Agency.

Becker's highlighted BWH's newest building, the Building for Transformative Medicine, a research and clinical center that opened September 2016 and attained LEED Gold certification for its reduced energy consumption and environmentally friendly design.

In addition, editors praised several other green initiatives at BWH:

  • From 2012 to 2016, Brigham and Women's Hospital increased recycling from 12 percent to 30 percent.
  • During that same period, it also reduced regulated medical waste from 16 percent to 10 percent and increased composting from 1 percent to 12 percent as part of the Healthier Hospitals Initiative.
  • The above initiatives resulted in an estimated savings of $30,000 on a 5,600-ton waste stream.
  • The hospital received a Partner for Change Award from Practice Greenhealth in 2016 and the Mayor’s Carbon Cup at the Greenovate Boston Awards for its commitment to a 35 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions intensity by 2020.
