Kathryn M. Rexrode, MD, MPH, Chief Academic Officer

Kathleen RexrodeKathryn M. Rexrode, MD, MPH, serves as the chief academic officer at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a role she assumed Oct. 1, 2024. In this role, Rexrode provides oversight, guidance, and support to both the Education and Research enterprises at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Rexrode has been an integral member of the Brigham community for 30 years, serving in a number of leadership roles, including director of the Brigham Research Institute, and chief of the Division of Women’s Health in the BWH Department of Medicine, the latter role she retained with her appointment to chief academic officer.

As chief of the Division of Women’s Health, Rexrode oversees clinical, research and educational programs of the Division. She has created new opportunities for internal residents in ambulatory care for women, expanded the medical specialties in the Gretchen S. and Edward A. Fish Center for Women’s Health, and launched new clinical programs in Menopause and Midlife Care and in Obstetric Internal Medicine.

Early on, she served as program director for the BWH/HVMA Primary Care Residency Program, and co-lead on a U54 Career Enhancement Core. She is a lauded mentor and collaborator, receiving the Harvard Medical School A. Clifford Barger for Excellence in Mentoring Award in 2016, the Brigham and Women’s Hospital Pillar Senior Mentorship Award in 2020, and the Mass General Brigham Pillars of Excellence Award for Research Collaboration in 2022.

During her time at the Brigham – and as a nationally recognized women’s health and cardiovascular epidemiology scientist – Rexrode has proven herself a strong, forward-thinking leader who is known for her commitment to patients, colleagues and community.

In addition, Rexrode’s achievements in research are extensive. She has a robust National Institutes of Health (NIH) research portfolio addressing cardiovascular disease in women, has authored more than 360 peer-reviewed manuscripts, and has served on numerous NIH and foundation grant review committees. She is an appointed member and past chair of the American Heart Association Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke in Women and Underrepresented Populations Committee and has contributed to multiple scientific statements and guidelines. She is deeply committed to advancing equity and inclusion and has served as the faculty director of the Office for Women’s Careers, Center for Diversity and Inclusion since 2012.

Rexrode received her MD from the Case Western Reserve School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio, completed her residency in internal medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and obtained her Master’s in Public Health from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
