John Belknap serves as the chief compliance officer of Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Physician Organization and Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital, a role he assumed on December 1, 2023.
In this role, Belknap is responsible for managing the daily corporate compliance activities within the Brigham family. He serves as a resource on compliance-related issues and manages them proactively, oversees compliance activities and monitors and communicates new regulations and standards. He works with the compliance teams throughout the Brigham family and the integrated Mass General Brigham Billing, Research, and Operations Corporate Compliance in his efforts.
Belknap, who is also the chief compliance officer of Massachusetts General Hospital and Mass Eye and Ear, is a proven leader who has worked in the space for more than 15 years. He has a track record of providing thoughtful and steady compliance leadership, and his scope of work has included corporate compliance, clinical compliance, research compliance, billing compliance, and risk management.
Prior to his current position, Belknap directed the Mass General Billing Compliance Office. Belknap established this office in 1998 to address the increased scrutiny of physician documentation and coding. The connection between regulatory compliance and advancing the quality of care and patient safety has been a career-long focus for Belknap.
Belknap received his B.A. in English from the University of Vermont and his M.P.A with a concentration in Health Policy from Northeastern University. Belknap also serves as a guest lecturer at Harvard Medical School and Boston University School of Law.
