Dr. Giles Boland is President of the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) and Physicians Organizations (BWPO) and Executive Vice President of Mass General Brigham (MGB). He is also the Executive Sponsor for Global Patient Services at MGB. He is a radiologist by training and is also the Philip H. Cook Distinguished Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School.
As president of BWH, Dr. Boland oversees approximately 24,000 employees within a large academic medical center and one of the affiliate teaching hospitals for Harvard Medical School (HMS). With the Executive leadership team, he is responsible for ensuring that delivery of the optimal patient outcomes and compassionate care to the diverse set of patients that BWH serves from across the Globe. As part of the tripartite mission of BWH, Dr. Boland collaborates with leadership to grow and enhance the Research and Educational mission of this world renowned academic medical Center. As president of the BWPO, a faculty practice plan of more than 1900 physicians, Dr. Boland directs the strategic work of the organization and leads a number of priorities, playing a key role on the Brigham and Women’s Hospital leadership team.
As executive vice president of MGB, he plays an active leadership role within the Mass General Brigham system, setting and guiding strategy, priorities, and performance. He also serves as the executive leader of Global Patient Services, the new systemwide initiative to provide leading clinical care to patients from around the country and around the world. As Executive Sponsor for GPS at MGB, Dr. Boland works across Mass General Brigham to ensure that International Patients can connect with disease focused experts in a caring and culturally appropriate setting.
Working with the 15 department chairs at the Brigham, Dr. Boland leads the BWPO in serving as the strong and united voice for its physicians, increasing physician wellbeing and professional fulfillment, and maintaining organizational financial health. Additionally, Dr. Boland serves as an institutional leader in advancing and affirming the Brigham’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion by partnering closely with the department chairs, and serving as a co-executive sponsor of the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Health Equity, and Community Health Advisory Committee.
Dr. Boland received his medical degree at the London Hospital Medical College, London University, and completed his residency at Guy’s Hospital, London. In 1992 he began his fellowship in Radiology at Massachusetts General Hospital and joined the faculty in 1994 before moving to BWH as Chair of Radiology in 2016 and President of the BWPO as of Sept. 1, 2020 and then President of BWH in March 2024.
His focus is on the delivery of cost-effective patient outcomes, which drives his interests to include practice and workflow re-design and management, quality and safety, leadership, information technology (especially those that improve outcomes), the patient experience, patient and employee wellness and development of new markets and system integration. He has written numerous peer-reviewed articles on these topics and has conducted over 200 national and international presentations on these issues. He is the past president of the Society of Abdominal Radiology.
