In our commitment to engage our incumbent workforce by providing the support and tools needed to succeed in fulfilling their personal, professional, and educational potential; Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) is providing the following services:

Computer Skills Course

This class is designed for employees who want to familiarize themselves with the basic functionality of the computer.

By the end of the program, employees will demonstrate proficiency in:

  • Turning on and logging onto a computer
  • Using a mouse & keyboard
  • Opening an email account and utilizing Outlook
  • Basic features of Microsoft Word
  • Using the internet for research
  • Using PeopleSoft, Vitals, Mass General Brigham Personnel Directory and other common programs available to BWH employees

ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Course

BWH ESOL program focuses on Career Development tools to help employees communicate and interact with supervisors, patients, co-workers, and patients.

By the end of the program, employees will improve:

  • Listening comprehension
  • Reading directions
  • Speaking and pronunciation
  • Using correct grammar
  • Writing and organizing with clarity

All classes are free and are held in the Longwood Medical area.

Citizenship/Immigration Services

Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) offers its employees and their extended families the opportunity to take free U.S. Citizenship classes provided by Jewish Vocational Services.

JVS Citizenship Services

JVS Citizenship Services Provides:

  • Support with citizenship application through our partners at Project Citizenship
  • Individualized test preparation
  • 8 hours of classes covering U.S History and Civic Lessons
  • Interview Practice

Requirements:

  • Have a green card
  • Be moderately proficient in English
  • Be ready to apply for citizenship

Mass General Brigham Courses

Online College Preparation Program (OCPP)

The Online College Preparation Program (OCPP), run by Mass General Brigham Workforce Development, uses multimedia presentations and a simulated online classroom to help students to learn about and prepare for online college classes. In addition, course modules are designed to help students to prepare for and to succeed in college in both online and traditional classrooms. *The OCPP is offered throughout the year.*

The new version of this popular, free program was developed in collaboration with Rutgers University online learning experts.

Successful completion of the OCPP will allow you the opportunity to:

  • Expand options in higher education
  • Gain confidence and competence in online learning
  • Tune up your time management and study skills
  • Complete pre-requisites for other Mass General Brigham Workforce Development programs

The general OCPP completion requirements include*:

  • Online Readiness Course (ORC): Become familiar with the online learning environment and practice online learning skills.
  • Time Management (TM): Analyze how you currently spend your time and explore tips to balance work, family and school.
  • Study Skills (SS): Review basic study skills and learn new tips and tools for academic success.

Individuals successfully completing this program may be eligible to participate in a free (Mass General Brigham-sponsored) three credit Medical Terminology course offered in partnership with Quinsigamond Community College.

Medical Terminology

Mass General Brigham has partnered with Quinsigamond Community College to offer a 10-week course where you can earn 3 college credits. The course is free to qualifying employees with the exception of the cost of the book.

Upon successful completion of the Medical Terminology course, you will:

  • Expand your medical vocabulary and develop skills in comprehending medical terms by analyzing their elements
  • Relate the medical word to the corresponding anatomical site, spell and pronounce medical terms correctly, and read medical reports with understanding
  • Apply this new language to body systems, homeostasis and pathological conditions affecting the human body
  • Gain confidence and competence in online learning

The Medical Terminology course includes:

  1. Language Lab
  2. Discussion Boards
  3. Exams and Final Project

Prerequisite: Complete the Online College Preparation Program (OCPP).
