Work and Life Resources

At Brigham and Women’s Hospital, we encourage our employees to strive for a work/life balance. We believe it is best to have a personal life, not just a career. Here are some of the many resources available to help employees address the transitions and challenges of life beyond the workplace, while balancing personal and work responsibilities.

General Resources

Employee Assistance Program (EAP) - All people face challenges in their daily lives. The EAP is a preventive and early intervention work and life resource for all employees, medical staff, and their household members, staffed by licensed professional clinicians with expertise in issues that impact individuals, families and the workplace. The EAP provides free and confidential consultations, short term problem solving, and referrals for dealing with a wide range of issues including family, legal, personal, financial, mental health, grief and loss, substance abuse, and work related concerns, as well as resources for child care and elder care. The program also offers seminars on finances, parenting, elder care and balancing work and family, as well as a free lactation support program, The Mothers’ Corner. The EAP’s BWH office is at the Neville House, and there are offices at other Mass General Brigham locations as well.

Office of Work/Life (Harvard) - BWH employees may access many of the resources available through Harvard’s Office of Work and Family programs, including seminars on a wide range of work-life topics.

The Kraft Family Blood Donor Center - We are your hospital-based blood and platelet donor center located in the Jimmy Fund Building of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Our mission is to be the primary blood product supplier for our patients, and we are open to both employees and the public. Looking for a way you can immediately have an impact at BWH? All of the donated blood and platelet products we collect directly benefit our patients. We ask that you consider donating blood or platelets, and invite you to schedule a donation appointment with us.

Prospective and New Parents

Adoption assistance - Benefits eligible employees who have completed 12 months of employment with BWH may be eligible to receive assistance with the adoption process.

Parenting leave is available for childbearing, adoptive, and foster parents.

Lactation support - The Mothers' Corner provides new mothers with the opportunity to continue breastfeeding while back at work -- as well as resources on breastfeeding, such as publications and workshops. An efficient, electric breast pump is provided in a private, comfortable room so working mothers can express their milk while at work.

Child Care

There are numerous child care options available to employees of BWH and other MGB-affiliated institutions, including traditional, backup, “in a pinch”, and school and summer vacation care. In addition, the LMA Family Childcare Network provides access to in-home childcare providers in neighborhoods surrounding the Longwood Medical Area. In some cases, child care discounts and subsidies are also available.

Relationship and Parenting Challenges

Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

The EAP offers counseling, resources, workshops, and seminars to address a wide range of challenges relating to family and intimate relationships. Additionally, the Center for Community Health and Health Equity’s (CCHHE) Passageway program provides support, resources, and outreach to those concerned about abuse from an intimate partner.

Elder Care

In addition to providing resources and referrals to elder care providers, the EAP sponsors a facilitated discussion group covering topics such as care coordination; family issues associated with caring for an elder adult; legal, estate and medical issues; grieving loss; and most importantly, caring for oneself in the midst of it all.

Flexible/Alternative Work Arrangements

BWH’s Alternative Work Arrangement Policy makes it possible for an employee, in agreement with their manager and HR Consultant, to meet the hospital’s business goals while maintaining work/life balance through the use of flexible scheduling, job sharing, and telecommuting.

Financial Concerns

BWH’s Employee Hardship Assistance Program provides financial counseling and assistance to eligible employees experiencing economic hardship due to a temporary, unforeseen or emergent personal financial crisis. You may view the program policy and criteria here. In addition, the EAP offers information and seminars on financial topics such as home buying and college funding.
