Research Summary
Using epidemiological and health services research methods, my current areas of investigation include characterizing outcomes from surgical procedures and examining variations in outcomes. My research focuses on improving the quality of surgical care through the improved understanding of the processes and structures linked to surgical outcomes.
Based upon my clinical practice in the care of acutely ill patients, I have many active research interests in this patient population, ranging from host immune response to injury to long-term consequences of delirium. As the intensive care unit is a “natural laboratory”, the SICU provides a rich tapestry for generating important clinical questions.
Finally, I have a great deal of interest in improving the quality of surgical care of underserved populations through improved understanding of the mechanisms that lead to healthcare disparities and developing interventions to mitigate these disparities.
