Introduction
Dr. Selwyn O. Rogers, Jr. is the Division Chief of Trauma, Burns, and Surgical Critical Care and the Program Director for the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at Brigham and Women's Hospital. The one-year ACGME accredited fellowship for those with three years of general surgery training in the United States provides surgical education of the highest caliber leading to American Board of Surgery Certification in Surgical Critical Care within an environment designed to encourage clinical and basic scientific investigational experience.
The surgical critical care training at Brigham and Women's and our affiliated teaching hospitals provides a diverse experience encompassing all elements of surgical critical care. These combined hospital facilities allow each surgical critical care fellow to obtain a large experience to develop independent responsibility in the postoperative care of a variety of surgical patients. In addition to rotations in the primary surgical intensive care units, an extensive array of electives are available throughout a premier academic medical center.
We seek to train surgical critical care fellows who will become leaders in surgical critical care and become directors of surgical intensive care units throughout the country.
Objectives
-
To offer a surgical critical care fellowship through which graduates qualify for board examination and the assumption of independent responsibilities in clinical practice after one clinical year of fellowship training.
-
To provide the opportunity for a second year of investigation in clinical investigation or bench research.
-
To maximize the trainee's responsibilities in patient management and build upon prior knowledge in critical care.
-
To encourage those individuals interested in careers in academic surgery to develop the necessary skills in surgical research, education and/or administration through a broad range of available opportunities designed to maximize academic development.
Research Opportunities
Research or career development opportunities include basic science bench research in a variety of Harvard or outside labs, pursuit of an M.P.H. degree from Harvard School of Public Health or pursuit of an M.B.A. degree from the Harvard Business School. Fellows may obtain their own funding through various research grant and scholarship programs.
