Program Introduction
Dr. Jerome Richie is the Division Chief of Urology and Program Director. The Harvard Program in Urology, a four-year training program is based at three hospitals in the medical school area: Brigham and Women's Hospital, Children's Hospital and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. The Brigham and Women's Hospital, with its well-established reputation as one of the finest teaching hospitals in the world, opened its new 750-bed hospital in the summer of 1980. The Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center is a leading institution in the field of patient care and research. The Children's Hospital has an established urology service and a worldwide reputation for excellence in the treatment of both complex and common pediatric urological problems. All three hospitals have active emergency rooms and constitute a designated trauma center.
The training program accepts three new residents each year and graduates three each year. All urology residents spend one designated preliminary year in the BWH general surgery residency program prior to commencement of their urology training in the PGY-2 year.

Rotations
Rotations during the clinical years provide exposure to all aspects of general urologic diagnosis and treatment and, further, offer an unusually extensive experience in pediatric urology, endocrine and renovascular surgery, urologic oncology, endourology, ESWL, laparoscopy, impotence, infertility, and reconstructive urology. Expanded pediatric rotations include a four-month period as chief resident on the urology service at Children's Hospital.
In addition, the training program incorporates urology rotations at the West Roxbury Veteran's Administration Medical Center. The West Roxbury V.A. has a full urologic service as well as a very large spinal cord injury center caring for many patients with complex neurologic disorders.

Conferences
Joint teaching rounds with radiology, nephrology, and pathology supplement basic clinical instruction. Teaching clinical rounds are held at each of the hospitals with key members of faculty. A joint Countway Library rounds is held weekly with the active participation of other teaching programs throughout the New England area. Distinguished national and international lecturers are often invited as guests. Intensive exposure to selected topics of basic science, endocrinology, genetics and medical advances is achieved in weekly teaching seminars, monthly journal clubs and selected grand rounds.

Research Opportunities
During the second year of the program, an ambulatory rotation is supplemented by the opportunity for scholarly activities and research. Residents are encouraged to plan projects and to arrange collaborations with other disciplines in the Harvard Medical School area. Current projects in the various urology laboratories of the program include research work in tumor immunology, immunobiology of renal cell cancer, mechanisms of BPH, molecular biology and oncogenes, novel combination chemotherapeutic approaches, tumor metatases, and infertility. The laboratory experience affords the resident an opportunity to write scientific papers and to present data at national meetings.
