Moving to the Top: Establishing Your Research Program at BWH

Early career junior faculty investigators are invited to discuss establishing their labs at BWH. Learn about navigating the BWH/HMS landscape from the experiences of some of BWH's scientific leaders and build rapport with a cohort of your colleagues from a range of disciplines.  Topics to be discussed include: Starting a New Lab at BWH; Nuts and Bolts of Managing Your NIH (and other) Dollars; Staffing Your Lab; Mentoring and Being Mentored; Project Management and Laboratory Leadership. See Details on webpage.  Course Application is submitted to the OPRC. Reference materials will be provided.  Attendance at all six sessions is required. 

DATES AND TIMES (subject to change): We will finalize 6 of these 8 dates -
January 15, Thursday, January 29, Thursday, February 19, Thursday,March 12, Monday,March 30, and Thursday, April 9, Thursday, April 28, and Thursday, May 14. All sessions held from 4:30-6:00PM, One Brigham Circle, 4th floor, Room 4-002H. Enrollment in this course is limited.

Introduction to Human Resources Concepts: What PIs Need to Know

This workshop provides Research Faculty, and Research/Lab Managers with the opportunity to learn basic Human Resources information which support staffing and managing a successful lab. Attendees will develop the knowledge, skills and tools to successfully manage productive postdocs, graduate students and technicians; promote a positive lab environment; and to prevent difficult personnel challenges before they arise.  This interactive case-based workshop will emphasize key points from each of the following important topics;

  • Fundamentals of Employment Law (leaves, appropriate interview questions, fair labor standards, etc.)
  • Performance Management (how to give feedback, how to set goals and expectations, introduction to the annual career conference)
  • Documentation (how to legally document all types of performance, when and how to use tools; performance improvement or corrective action plans)

Behavioral Based Interviewing

Behavioral interviewing is a structured, goal-oriented interview process that helps you better evaluate applicants and improve the match between people and jobs. You will learn:

  • How to select skills definitions that reflect essential job functions,
  • Develop job-related questions,
  • Gain job-related behavioral examples,
  • Draw out both positive and contrary information from candidates,
  • Use "Rating Anchors" to rate a candidate’s skills,
  • Adapt Behavioral Interviewing to your particular needs,
  • Conduct a behavior-based interview
